Weight Loss
Weight loss is a multi-billion dollar industry in this country.
Most weight loss programs do not lead to long-term (multiyear) success
for the majority of people who use them. Why? Because the reasons
people had to gain weight in the first place are many, and because
most weight loss programs have one particular diet plan that they
recommend for everyone. For example some people gain due to a sluggish
thyroid, some due to poor eating habits, and some due to emotional
problems. In each of these cases, a different plan is needed.
Change may be needed in such areas as correct individualized nutrition,
exercise, behavioral changes and emotional health to positively
affect an individuals weight. Good nutrition is vital to your
health and your weight. A basic dietary assessment can help determine
hidden food sensitivities that can lead to a sluggish digestive
system and overall fatigue. Effective weight management incorporates
a multidisciplinary approach to address the whole individual in
mind, body and spirit.
In my practice, I find that weight loss is often the by-product
of good health and healthy eating. I focus on healthy eating plans
for each individual. I have over 70 different food plans! Come in
and see what is right for you.
A word of caution:
There are many diet plans and programs out there for you to consider.
I would recommend that you consider the following in choosing yours,
as we do in planning ours:
- Your diet needs to be sensible and safe, to help you lose fat
tissue selectively.
- Your diet also needs to be one with which you can easily comply.
- Be aware of popular plans that promise a quick and dramatic
weight change. Often these are unbalanced and dangerous. The first
10-15 pounds of change are often due to loss of lean body mass
and water.
- As a rule, expect no more than 2 pounds per week of weight loss.
Discuss any plan that produces larger gains with your health care
provider.
- In any event, do not use diets of 1000 calories per day or less.
